Act 5 Manifesting Narratives

This project responds to the S’kop text through the themes of various paradoxes found in the text ie. resilience / instability and obscurity / exposure.

It aims to test the idea of the “gaze” that would be inevitable in the situating of a “secret” enterprise of informal butchers in a suburb such as Oaklands.

The following drawings demonstrate how I have taken an existing enterprise; the Oaklands Butchery, and realised an agreement that the ’S’kop’ butchers could come to with this business in order to work together. I have taken the site of the existing Oaklands Butchery and opened it up to be volumes higher to create shared production space. These spaces are explored by visitors through the circulation of the staircase to get to the roof. It is fully exposed to the public by means of a domestic window out onto the Oaklands Shopping centre and surrounding streets.

This has brought me to the conclusion/understanding that certain measures need to be taken in order to allow people their comforts. In doing so, you can introduce new ideas within these circumstances. By making this intervention overly exposed and sold as a niche “fine-dining” experience, it appeals to the average Oaklands demographic and gives the ’S’kop’ butchers entry to a new market. Furthermore, I have explored the idea of the Spectcle of the Other. In doing so, I found that “difference” is important to be placed next to the expected as it gives new meaning to both entities.
